The fortress of Pirot, also known as Kale or Momčilos castle, is a cultural monument of great significance. It is part of the Pirot’s city center and contains cultural layers from prehistoric to modern times.
After extensive research and conservation and restoration works carried out in the 70’s and 80’s of the last century, there was a period of several decades of neglect and degradation.
During 2008 and 2009 conservation works were carried out in the Upper Town, and then in 2017 a comprehensive renovation of this extremely important complex has been initiated bringing it to its final purpose - exhibition settings and a modern heritage presentation.
